Reading and Writing — AI

I’ve wanted to write about AI, but despite extensive reading on this subject, I’m afraid I remain torn about what to say. Here are the major issues as I see them….

  1. The threat of AI is real, but so are the many benefits of applying this technology.
  2. In my field of medicine, I can easily see many benefits that could come from its application to population health management. There’s no way an individual provider can monitor and care for a large population without assistance from AI. On the other hand, the use of AI in diagnostics and especially therapeutics conjures up several. Dangerous scenarios, particularly if an AI system develops its own conscious will, are not hard to imagine.
  3. Huge amounts of money are at stake in the AI economy, and this will probably be the deciding factor as to whether or not things move ahead, with or without guardrails to avoid the ever-present dangers.
  4. My sentiments lean toward moving forward cautiously, whether we can do so, especially at the expense of missing out on huge profits remains to be seen.
