Reading and Writing as a Vocation

I have always loved to read and have somewhat of a knack for writing non-fiction, not so much for fiction. Thus, in my retirement years, when asked what I do for a living, I quickly answer that I read and write.

I am a retired internist who decided at the age of 66 with the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic that I probably shouldn’t be doing bedside care any longer.

I have also worked as a hospital administrator and healthcare consulting. I’ve tried to share what I’ve learned in these roles through my writing and since retirement, I’ve written one book and had one scholarly journal article published.

The not so hidden little secret here is that I’m finally doing what always wished I had time to do, i.e. read and write. Admittedly, it’s hard to get paid for these pursuits, but the joy and happiness I get from having time to explore my many interests, especially through reading, is rewarding enough at this stage of my life.

For those who get a little bored playing golf every day or whose passion for travel has been curtailed during the pandemic, I heartily recommend reading and writing as a vocation. Try it you just might find it’s the niche you’ve been looking for!
